The city of Ratlam is administrative headquarter of the Ratlam district. The district which was earlier a
princely state in Malwa Region was dissolved after the independence and was incorporated into the state of Madhya Pradesh. Ratlam city forms part of of Ratlam district that apart from city comprises of Alot, Jaora ,Piploda, Sailana ,Bajna . Located in the northern most part of the state, Ratlam city owes its origin to Captain Borthwick who in 1829 established it as one of the first commercial cities in Central India. The city in those times was famous for its opium, tobacco, and salt trade and also bargains called "Sattas". Before the inauguration of railways, the city of Ratlam was well known commercial hub in Central India.
Ratlam city in the state of Madhya Pradesh has an area of 15.13 square miles (39.19 km) . The city is administrative unit of Ratlam district. Majority of central and state government offices are located in the city. The urban infrastructure of the city is the reason behind choosing this part as a focal point in the district.

Ratlam Nagar Nigam ( Ratlam Municipal Corporation)
The city is
governed by the Ratlam Nagar Nigam (Municipality) which takes
care of the civil and urban infrastructure of the city.The work of the municipality is subdivided into further categories and it mainly undertakes the following responsibilities. Ratlam Nagar Nigam implies in managing its fiscal resources prudently.It is entrusted with a large number of functions and responsibilities relating to civic and community welfare.These are civic duties range from building roads, bridges, to revenue collection, and lastly development work.
