The city of Ratlam is administrative headquarter of the Ratlam district. The district which was earlier a princely state in Malwa Region was dissolved after the independence and was incorporated into the state of Madhya Pradesh. Ratlam city forms part of of Ratlam district that apart from city comprises of Alot, Jaora ,Piploda, Sailana ,Bajna . Located in the northern most part of the state, Ratlam city owes its origin to Captain Borthwick who in 1829 established it as one of the first commercial cities in Central India. The city in those times was famous for its opium, tobacco, and salt trade and also bargains called "Sattas". Before the inauguration of railways, the city of Ratlam was well known commercial hub in Central India.

Ratlam city in the state of Madhya Pradesh has an area of 15.13 square miles (39.19 km) . The city is administrative unit of Ratlam district. Majority of central and state government offices are located in the city. The urban infrastructure of the city is the reason behind choosing this part as a focal point in the district.

The city is governed by the Ratlam Nagar Nigam (Municipality) which takes care of the civil and urban infrastructure of the city.The work of the municipality is subdivided into further categories and it mainly undertakes the following responsibilities. Ratlam Nagar Nigam implies in managing its fiscal resources prudently.It is entrusted with a large number of functions and responsibilities relating to civic and community welfare.These are civic duties range from building roads, bridges, to revenue collection, and lastly development work.

For smooth running of the administration, the city of Ratlam is divided into six tehsils and six blocks respectively. The six Tehsils that comes under the district of Ratlam are Jaora, Alot, Piploda, Ratlam, Sailana and Bajna. {For administrative updates click here}

The district of Ratlam is headed by the collector and he is supported by other sub ordinates to help him in governmental functionality. The collector of the district is responsible for looking after the law and order in the area. The responsibilities of the collectors includes managing day to day affair of the city, to manage fiscal resources generated by the district and to look after law and order of the district. The The Collecteor of Ratam is assisted by Deputy Collector who in turn looks after smaller administrative blocks like Tehsils of the district.

Police Department in Ratlam is responsible for the maintenance of law and order in the area. The modernize force diffuse minor and major issues to avoid any clashes in the district.Deputy Inspector General of Ratlam keeps vigil over the district and is assisted by Superintendent of Police who supervises the minor and major development relating to law and order in the city and district.
